The Checklist

1. What is the base layer under the color made of?

TPU, PU, or nothing — with pigment sitting straight on the adhesive? This is where budget films hide their savings, and where delamination starts.

2. Is the TPU aliphatic or aromatic?

Three-second answer, years of difference. Aromatic yellows under UV; aliphatic is the premium standard.

3. How are the layers joined — fused or glued?

Heat-fused layers behave as one material. Lamination adds an extra adhesive boundary that can age and fail.

4. Does the film contain plasticizers, and what share?

Migrating plasticizers are the classic cause of yellowing, tackiness and adhesive residue on removal.

5. What is the thickness of each layer — not just the total?

A thick total can hide a thin working layer. Suppliers confident in their construction publish per-layer numbers.

6. Can you share test data?

Thermal cycling, UV chamber hours, delamination testing after stretch. “Trust us” is not a test report.

7. What exactly does the warranty cover — and for how long?

Yellowing? Delamination? Edge lifting? A warranty that names failure modes is worth more than a longer one that names none. Ours is spelled out here: 8-year warranty terms.

How to Use It

You do not need a materials science degree — you need a supplier who answers all seven without changing the subject. Specific answers mean engineering; vague answers mean marketing. Two Chemistries, Two Futures

Both are thermoplastic polyurethanes, and on the roll they look identical. The difference is in the isocyanate chemistry the polymer is built on, and it shows up under sunlight.

Aromatic TPU is cheaper to produce. Its molecular rings absorb UV and degrade, which shows up as the classic yellow tint — first at panel edges, then across the film. On white and light-colored cars it becomes visible painfully fast.

Aliphatic TPU is UV-stable by design. It does not yellow for years, which is why it is the de facto standard for premium PPF — and why it costs more. Every BodyGuard film, from Gloss to Super Gloss, is built on aliphatic TPU; it is stated in our technical datasheets, not just on this blog.

Why This One Question Works

Because it is a fork with no good evasion. A supplier selling aliphatic film will say so instantly — it justifies their price. A supplier selling aromatic film has to either admit it or get vague: “military grade polyurethane”, “advanced UV package”, “self-healing top coat”. A UV-blocking top coat can slow the yellowing of an aromatic base, but it treats the symptom, not the chemistry underneath.

Vagueness in response to a three-second question is itself the answer.

What Plasticizers Are

Rigid polymers — PVC above all — are not naturally soft enough to wrap a car. To make them flexible, manufacturers mix in liquid plasticizers, essentially oils. The critical detail: plasticizers are not chemically bonded to the polymer. They sit between its molecules, and over time they migrate out.

How Migration Kills a Film

Heat and UV accelerate the migration, and it goes in two directions. Outward, to the surface: the film becomes tacky, grabs dirt, yellows, then — having lost its softeners — turns brittle and cracks. Downward, into the adhesive: the glue chemistry degrades, producing bubbles, lifting edges and, at removal time, adhesive residue baked onto the paint.

Here is the economics: plasticizer is the cheapest way to make a film soft. So as a rule of thumb, the cheaper the film, the more plasticizer it carries — and the faster this whole sequence plays out. A budget vinyl parked in the sun can show yellowing and brittleness within one to two years.

The Alternative: Softness by Chemistry

Thermoplastic polyurethane takes the other route. TPU is inherently elastic — its flexibility comes from the polymer chemistry itself, not from liquid additives, so it does not depend on plasticizers the way PVC does. That is a core reason premium PPF is TPU-based: there is simply much less in the film that can migrate, evaporate or poison the adhesive. Some manufacturers advertise fully plasticizer-free formulations; the exact percentage is a factory claim, but the principle is solid materials science.

What This Means for Your Car

Practical consequences are easy to picture. Cheap plasticized film after a couple of summers: yellow tint, stiff edges, sticky surface, and a removal job that involves solvents and swearing. A quality TPU film: comes off clean, keeps its edges down for years, and stays optically clear — which is exactly what an 8-year warranty like ours is priced on.

Type A — Single TPU Layer

Structure: TPU → color layer → adhesive. The color is applied to the underside of the TPU film, sitting directly on the adhesive. This is the simplest and cheapest construction to manufacture. The trade-off: the pigment layer is in direct contact with the adhesive, and when the film is stretched hard during installation the color can lighten or micro-crack along edges, because nothing protects it from below.

Type B — TPU Face with a PU Base

Structure: TPU → color layer → PU film → adhesive. Here a polyurethane (but not thermoplastic polyurethane) layer sits under the color. It looks better on paper — the color is protected from both sides. The catch is that TPU and PU are different materials: they react differently to heat, stretch and UV. That mismatch creates stress at the layer boundary, which is the classic precondition for delamination over time. How long that takes depends on climate and installation — there is no independent public test data, so treat lifetime claims with caution.

Type C — Dual TPU “Sandwich”

Structure: TPU face → color layer → TPU base → adhesive. The color is encapsulated between two layers of the same TPU. The engineering logic is sound: identical material above and below the pigment means symmetric behavior under stretch and heat, and no boundary between dissimilar polymers. Some manufacturers additionally claim the two layers are joined by heat fusion rather than adhesive lamination, and quote matched layer thicknesses — reasonable design goals, though such figures are manufacturer claims rather than independently verified data. And any film promising it will “never” delaminate is overpromising: no honest engineer guarantees never.

Why the Stack Matters More Than the Swatch

Internal architecture determines the things you cannot see in a showroom: elasticity and material memory during installation, conformability on complex panels like bumpers and recesses, how edges and wrapped corners hold over the years, chemical compatibility between layers, and long-term stability under weather, heat and UV. Two films that look identical on day one can be completely different products on day five hundred.

What Actually Happens

During installation, PPF is stretched — locally up to 20–30% — and heated to conform to curves and recesses. A colored PPF is always a multilayer product: a clear top layer, a color layer, and whatever sits between the color and the adhesive. If those layers are made of different polymers, each one responds differently to that stretch and heat. Different materials have different elastic modulus, different thermal expansion and different residual stress after installation.

The result is shear stress that accumulates exactly at the boundary between dissimilar layers. The car then lives outdoors: UV exposure and daily thermal cycles — day and night, summer and winter — slowly weaken the bond between those layers. The first points of failure are always the same: panel edges, wrapped-under corners, and zones that were stretched the hardest during installation.

Why Cheap Colored Films Fail Faster

The economy in a budget colored film usually hides below the color layer. The top layer may genuinely be TPU — the material every salesperson mentions. But underneath the color you may find a PU or PVC-based layer, or no base layer at all, with the pigment sitting directly on the adhesive. Every one of those shortcuts creates a boundary between materials that age and move differently, and that boundary is where the film eventually lets go.

How to Protect Yourself Before You Buy

Ask your supplier one question that most spec sheets avoid: what is the base layer under the color made of? If the answer is confident and specific — the same aliphatic TPU as the top layer — the film’s structure is symmetric and the layers behave as one material under stress. If the answer is vague, the structure is probably where the price was cut.

Also ask how the layers are joined. Layers fused together in production behave differently from layers glued or laminated after the fact, because lamination adds one more adhesive boundary that can age.

The Bottom Line
